Randall David Bickel

Randall David “Squirrel” Bickel, 67, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 29, 2025. Randy was born February 16, 1958 in Phillipsburg, PA to Merle and Mary K. Bickel. He was preceded in death by his father.

Randy was the type of person who would give you the shirt off his back, and had palpable energy that many could not keep up with. He was given the nickname “Squirrel” while working in construction, as he would often be found feeding the squirrels on his lunch breaks. Randy had a deep compassion and love for animals of all kinds and it was not unusual for him to come home with anything from an iguana to guinea pigs. In his free time, he enjoyed spending time gardening and had a green thumb for both indoor and outdoor plants. Randy has worked at Walmart in Ruckersville, VA for the past 10 years and will be deeply missed by those he considered family at work. He has been an active member at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Charlottesville for over 40 years, which is where he was married and witnessed the baptism of both of his children.

Left to cherish Randy’s memory is his mother, Mary K. Bickel; wife of 40 years this September, Theresa “Tessie” Bickel; son, Lance Bickel (Chrissy); daughter, Carla Bickel; sisters, Julie Garner (David); brothers, Daryl Bickel and Jeff Bickel; mother-in-law, Margaret Jean Napier, granddaughter Teddy, and grandson Tucker; and many other family members and friends. He was a light to all who knew him and will be missed by all.

A funeral service for Randall will be held Friday, August 8, 2025 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 1500 Rio Rd. E., Charlottesville, VA 22901. Following the funeral service will be a a graveside service from 2:15 PM to 2:30 PM at Holly Memorial Gardens, 3251 Seminole Trail, Charlottesville, Virginia 22911.
