Sam was born on February 3, 1926, in Wilmington, DE, to Samuel Patterson Maroney and Lillian McCauley Maroney. After a tour of duty with the U. S. Army in the Philippines during World War II, Sam attended Wesleyan University, University of Delaware, and Duke University, studying biology. After he received his PhD from Duke in 1957, he moved to Charlottesville, Virginia, where he taught in the Biology Department at the University of Virginia for 42 years, serving as Professor as well as Assistant Dean of the Faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences.
Sam met his first wife, Mary Ellen (Mel) Woodward, in Wilmington, Delaware, when they were both working at Wanamaker’s Department Store. They were married in 1951. After Mel’s passing in 1986, Sam married Mary Louise Reisky-Dubnic in 1989, and moved to Westminster-Canterbury of the Blue Ridge (WCBR) in 2003, where they have enjoyed a caring and involved community for the past 19 years.
Sam was predeceased by his first wife Mel, his sister Ratie Moore, and his step-daughter Molly Reisky-Dubnic. He is survived by his second wife Mary Louise; his three children, David Roland Maroney and wife Mary Maroney and grandson Peter, Susan Alicia Maroney and husband Kevin Schaefer and grandchildren Jason and Anna Schaefer, and Megan Maroney Limburg and husband Timothy Limburg; his niece Cindy Moore Lowe; and his four step-children, Nina Haigney, and John, Didi and Sandy Reisky-Dubnic.
Sam’s natural low-key strength and humor always shone through even through the Alzheimer’s years. Sam’s children were his pride and joy, and it made him so happy to hear that his children were happy and healthy and loving the lives he helped them create.
