
Thomas Hugh Nelson of Charlottesville, VA died Friday, July 3, 2015. He was born in Crozet, VA on April 15, 1928 to the late Francis Page Nelson, MD, and Ruth Wayland Nelson. Two sisters, Katharine Page Nelson and Elizabeth Nelson Robinson Mapp, and a brother, Francis Page Nelson are also deceased. He is survived by his wife and best friend, Ann Clopton Stone Nelson, formerly of Richmond, VA. He is also survived by their three daughters, Katherine Lee Nelson of Albuquerque, NM, Margaret Elizabeth Nelson of Randolph, NJ, Patricia Ann Nelson of Denver, CO; two brothers, Charles Kinloch Nelson of Charlottesville, and Robert Bourne Nelson of Gordonsville. Hugh and Ann lived for many years in Upper Montclair, NJ where they raised their family. They retired to Charlottesville in 1990. Hugh was a graduate of The Miller School and the University of Virginia School of Engineering and was a professional engineer in the state of New Jersey. Professionally, he held a number of engineering and management positions in the Lamp Division, Westinghouse Electric Corp. and later with Philips Electronics as manager of Mechanization Engineering. He was also a U.S. Army veteran. Hugh volunteered for the Blue Ridge Food Bank, Meals on Wheels and received the 1997 Joseph B. O’Connor Award for Outstanding Service to the Central Virginia Chapter of the American Red Cross. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM at Monticello Memory Gardens on Thursday, July 9, 2015, which will be officiated by Reverend David Wayland. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Hugh’s name to The Miller School, 1000 Samuel Miller Loop, Charlottesville, VA 22903 or another charity of your choice.
