

Celebrating the Life of Virginia Jean Beavers Spry Virginia Jean Beavers Spry, age 97, of Charlottesville, VA died August 11, 2016 at the Hospice House of the Piedmont. Virginia passed away peacefully surrounded by friends and family. She was a cherished Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, and friend. Virginia was born November 8, 1918 in War, WV. She was the daughter of the late D.W. and Lillie Mae Tunnell Beavers. She was the beloved wife of James Oral Spry, to whom she was married for 53 years. The Spry’s were longtime residents of Welch, WV and partners in the Jones & Spry grocery store chain. Virginia Spry graduated Concord University in Athens, WV with a Bachelor degree in Education and taught school in McDowell County for 35 years. Virginia was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she volunteered and was active in Circle #8 for 25 years. Virginia was also a long-time member of the Senior Center and enjoyed fellowship, luncheons, gardening, ceramics, painting, aquatics, family gatherings, celebrating holidays and birthdays, and long drives in the country. Virginia had many friends in the community and enjoyed active senior living at The Lodge at Old Trail. She adored her family and loved spending time with her daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Virginia loved life and enjoyed spending time with those she met. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Oral Spry; two sisters: Edna Marshall of Clearwater, FL; Ruth Payne of Crozet, VA; two brothers: Edward Beavers of Gulfport MS; Clifford Beavers of Beckley, WV; two sisters-in-law: Joyce Rich Beavers of Gulfport, MS; Dalice Spry Sampson of Lewisburg, WV; three brothers-in-law: Tom Marshall of Clearwater, FL; Jarvy Spry of Petersburg, VA; Benjamin Harrison Spry Jr. of Bluefield, WV; three nieces: Anita Payne of Newport News, VA; Phyllis Murensky of English, WV; Betty Payne Spry of Petersburg, VA; great niece Eunice Ruth Spry; and two nephews: Jarvy Baldwin Spry of Petersburg, VA and Jerry Beavers of Beckley, WV. She is survived by her daughter, Bobbie Jean Spry Thompson and husband, Dr. Ronald H. Thompson; two grandchildren: Tamela Thompson of Charlottesville, VA; Mark Thompson and wife Gina Thompson of Crozet, VA; two great granddaughters: Dominique Thompson and Anabella Thompson of Crozet, VA; four nieces: Lillian Payne Marsden of Charlottesville, VA; Carolyn Payne Riffe of Southaven, MS; Diane Smith of Gulfport, MS; Karen Rich of Gulfport, MS; two sisters-in-law: Ronell Spry Martin of Athens, WV; Mimi Spry of Bluefield, WV; brother-in-law: Dennis Spry of Lewisburg, WV; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins including: Lynn Allison Marsden, Leigh Ann Marsden Kremer, Chris Kremer, Allison Kremer, Victoria Kremer, Benjamin Kremer, Beth Murensky, Phillip Murensky, Alan Hetrick, Chris Scott, Julie Cotton, Chris Smith, Anna Blake and James Sampson. Virginia Spry’s Funeral will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, August 15th, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Harry Kennon and Andy Shelden, Organist. Friends and Family visitation is from 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., Funeral at 3:00 p.m., Reception following at the First United Methodist Church 914 E Jefferson Street Charlottesville, VA 22902.
