He graduated from Thomas Dale High School where he was president of his senior class, a member of the National Honor Society, participated in baseball, basketball, track and was co-captain of his twice undefeated football team. In 1961 Bill proudly graduated from the University of Virginia as a civil engineer and by 1963 had settled on a career in the construction industry that continued until March 2, 2016.
He enjoyed supporting the Association of General Contractors during his career, serving on committees and as it's local president. Pleasure came from simple things: UVA Sporting events, gardening, surf fishing in N.C. outer banks, creating, repairing, or building anything, and reading history and mystery books from the library book sale (a year's worth!).
Travel became the joy of his later years. His eyes sparkling as he spoke of his fascination with the builders of the past. He was awed by how much they knew and by their skill with limited tools and materials.
To cherish his memory William Scherer leaves behind his wife Vickie Scherer, a son Andrew Brady Scherer and his wife Lisa, two daughters Morgan Passiment and her husband Marc, Hilary Scherer and her husband Rick Jones, and three grandsons Austin Passiment, Ethan Passiment and William Andrew Scherer IV.
His heroic stand against the ravages of ALS was inspiring. In lieu of flowers please consider a contribution to the DC/MD/VA ALS Association (www.alsinfo.org).
A remembrance celebration will be held at Mt. Ida on March 13, 2016 from 2:00-4:00 PM. To participate please come with joy. For more information please contact [email protected] or call (732) 674-1170.
