Donna’s special calling on earth was her immense love of animals and nature, which included her dogs, cats, birds, bunnies and squirrels, who she cared for daily. Throughout her life, Donna held a special place in her heart for rescue animals, not only through her volunteer service at Springfield’s Animal Protective League, but also through the adoption of countless rescue dogs and cats. In the final years of her life, she deeply loved her adopted Animal Protective League cat, Hansel, who continues to act like a dog on a daily basis.
Donna enjoyed seeing her friends and family, working in her yard, gardening, and traveling. The simplest things in life brought her joy.
Donna did not belong to a church but was raised in the Methodist faith and possessed an unbreakable bond with God. She enjoyed watching Father Chapin every Sunday morning, and even throughout her battle with cancer, understood and accepted the disease and her fight was ultimately in God’s hands and to trust God’s timing.
Professionally, Donna retired from a lengthy career at the Illinois State Department of Revenue, where she served in various roles.
Donna was the daughter of Bernard C. and Marilyn (Elliott) Lane of Springfield. She is survived by her one son, Eric Miller of Chicago; brother, Doug Lane of North Canton, Ohio; one uncle, Darrell Elliott of Springfield; and several cousins and close friends.
Donna believed that death should be a celebration of an individual’s life and an event that brings together friends and family. As a result, there will be a short Celebration of Life at Butler Funeral Home – Chatham, 8855 State Route 4, Chatham, on Friday, January 9, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., with Celebrant Judy Woerner officiating. A luncheon will follow at Prairie View Reception Center, located on the same property as the funeral home. Dress will be casual, and all are invited.
A private Graveside Ceremony will be held at a later date, where Donna’s remains will be laid to rest at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield.
In the spirit of Proverbs 17:17, Donna was overwhelmed at the outpouring of kindness, love and support provided by so many during her illness and adversity.
In lieu of flowers, Donna has asked that any donations be made to the Central Illinois Food Repository.
