

She was born on May 25, 1927, in Decatur, IL, the daughter of Price and Katherine (Irwin) Pointer. Marilyn married Steven W. Markus on November 27, 1947, in Springfield, IL. They moved to Chatham in 1960. He preceded her in death in 2015, also on March 28.
Marilyn graduated from Feitshans High School in Springfield, where she was a majorette and played alto saxophone in the band. She graduated as valedictorian of her senior class. Marilyn was an accomplished dancer in her early years, performing for several civic organizations and community events. She was a member of Chatham United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, and Girl Scouts of America, serving as troop leader for several years.
Marilyn enjoyed many activities and interests. She spent much of her spare time knitting, reading, and creating ceramic figurines. She and her husband traveled extensively throughout the US, including Hawaii and Alaska. She was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed Monster Trucks, road rallies and watching any kind of race. Marilyn and Steve volunteered every year at the annual Springfield Air Rendezvous. They also volunteered countless hours over many years at the Midwest Mission Distribution Center in Pawnee. Nominated for her work at MMDC, she was awarded the Springfield Heart of Gold Award in 2017.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; and stepmother, Stella (Harris) Pointer.
Marilyn is survived by her daughter, Colleen (Sander) Reinhartz of Parrish, FL; grandchild, Lucas (Victoria) Reinhartz; and great-grandchildren, August and Violet Reinhartz.
Visitation: Family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at Butler Funeral Home – Chatham, 8855 State Route 4, Chatham, IL.
Additional Visitation and Celebration of Life: Family will receive friends from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at Butler Funeral Home – Chatham, followed by the Celebration of Life at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Keith Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Chatham Memorial Cemetery. If you choose to attend the services, please wear bright colors in honor of Marilyn.
