CHATHAM—C. Robin Turner died peacefully at home surrounded by his family
on 3/13/10 of lung disease.
He was the husband of Christie (Munsey) Due Turner.
Mr. Turner graduated from The Kingswood School in West Hartford, CT. class of 1951 where he excelled in sports. When he attended Amherst College from which he graduated in 1955 with a major in economics, his freshman football team beat Dartmouth College freshman and ended with an undefeated season. In his junior year, he caught the winning touchdown against Brown University, and Amherst ended the season with another undefeated team.
Mr. Turner attended Boston University evenings to attain the coveted Charter Property and Casualty Underwriter designation. In 1958 he purchased an insurance business from the estate of Arthur T. Wholly in Chatham. While dedicating himself to the insurance business as an Independent Insurance Agent, Mr. Turner at one time or another wrote protection for most of the Chatham’s businesses and clubs.
Mr. Turner, a direct descendant of a German Hessian soldier captured at the Battle of Bennington in August of 1777, was a member of: St. Martin’s Masonic Lodge; The First Congregational Church of Chatham; Kiwanis Club of Central Cape Cod; Eastward Ho! Country Club for many years; Cape and Naples Amherst College Alumni Associations; Society of Mayflower Descendants, William White and John Alden Lines; co-founder of “The Cape Cod Chronicle”; Trustee of The Chatham Conservation Foundation serving as President for six years; and President of Chatham Chapter AFS International Scholarships Exchange Student Program.
Mr. Turner’s avid interest besides his family, were conservation, fishing and sailing off Monomoy Island in Nantucket Sound, and skiing and hunting in Rangeley, Maine where the family maintained a second home for thirty years.
Besides his wife, Christie, he is survived from a previous marriage to Marian N. (Tweedle) Turner by one son, Steven J. Turner of Chatham, daughters Lynne Suzanne Turner of New York City, Donna Gail Turner of Portland, ME., Christine Norma Turner of Greenfield, MA, step children Peter Due of Brewster, Tracy Due Lamperti of Eastham, six grandchildren, a brother, Thomas S. Turner of Simsbury, Ct., a sister, Abigail T. Meyer of Plantsville, CT and many nephews and nieces.
Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 7 Monday, March 15 at Nickerson Funeral Home, Crowell Road, Chatham. A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Chatham, 650 Main Street, Chatham, Tuesday, March 16th, at 11:00 am
