David Carnes, son of the late George and Jean Carnes passed away peacefully at home while surrounded by his family.
David was born at Newton Wellesley Hospital in Newton Massachusetts. At age 6, he and his family moved to Matawan, New Jersey and enjoyed spending summers on the Cape.
David attended Monmouth College (now Monmouth University) and continued to spend his summers on the Cape, working at the Chatham Fish Pier. David was drafted into the army and served in Vietnam 1970-1971.
Upon Discharge from the army, he moved to Chatham and worked at Chatham Seafood Co-op, where he rose to general manager. It was here that Dave met his future wife Roxane. They were married in 1973, and were happily wed for 48 years.
In 1981, with the help of Paul Lucas (Captain Eelgrass), David started Chatham Fish and Lobster Co. Inc. Along with running CF&L he also managed Chatham Weirs for many years. One of the duties that he enjoyed, was delivering seafood to restaurants on Nantucket in his boat when the planes could not fly due to weather. In 2018, Dave and his wife sold Chatham Fish and Lobster to Mac’s Seafood.
David is survived by his wife Roxane (Goodspeed) Carnes, his daughter, Kristen Schwartz (John), his grandchildren George and Miranda Schwartz, his son Michael Carnes (Lindsey). He is also survived by his sister Debra Ruisi and his nieces Heather Sosa (David), Janine Ruisi (Daniel Dietrich), and Nicole Ruisi (Adam Abbate), and their children, his brothers Mark (Helene), Michael, Patrick (Grace), and sister Kerri McGlynn, his cousins Nancy Helstrom, Bruce Scott (Ginger), and Richard Scott and his beloved dogs Lexi and Jack.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cape Cod Times Needy Fund, Animal Rescue League of Brewster, or to the charity of one’s choice.
