He attended the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, where he was valedictorian of the class of 1958. He received his master’s and doctoral degrees in organic chemistry from Harvard University in 1961 and 1963. At that time, Harvard had what was considered the world’s best chemistry department. These included the first biotechnology product ever approved for cancer, and very successful antihistamine, allergy and asthma drugs. He also oversaw a significant expansion of the number of doctoral level scientists working in research and the construction of major new research, biotechnology and drug safety testing facilities in New Jersey.
Prior to joining Schering Plough, Dr. Bullock worked in research as a head of medicinal chemistry at Abbott Laboratories in North Chicago, Illinois, and at Arthur D. Little, Inc. in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
After his retirement he joined Arthur D. Little, working as a part-time consultant on pharmaceutical and biotechnology research. He also served on the National Research Council committees which advised the U.S. Congress on various national research training programs, the Boards of Directors of Genzyme Transgenics Corporation in Framingham, MA, NeoGenesis in Cambridge, MA, and Array BioPharma in Boulder, CO, all start-up biotechnology firms, and on the editorial boards of several pharmaceutical research publications. At various times he held adjunct faculty positions at Northeastern University, MIT, and Rockefeller University in New York. He was a member of numerous professional societies and the Harvard Clubs of Boston and New York. His biography is listed in Who’s Who in America.
