

William Graham. Hughan, Jr. “Bill” of Chatham, MA passed away on June 30, 2015 at Pleasant Bay Nursing home in Brewster, MA at the age of 92. Born on June 9, 1923 in Patterson, NJ he was the only child of William Graham Hughan and Henrietta (Grube) Hughan of Lincoln Park, NJ and grew up in the house his father and uncle built. He graduated from Boonton High School in 1942 before taking a job in New York City with The National City Bank of New York where he met Winifred Mundy (Winnie). Bill joined the Army Air Corps and after he received his commission as a pilot, he and Winnie married in 1943 and moved to Biloxi, MS where he was stationed. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant as a flight instructor for the PBY Catalina flying boat.
After the war, he attended Columbia University as well as Pace University prior to joining Moore Business Forms in New Jersey, where he worked his way to management positions in New York City, West Hartford, CT and Boston, MA. He retired to Chatham, MA in 1986, to the summer home he and Winnie built in 1962, where they spent many hours with the family boating and swimming. Bill enjoyed playing tennis until he was 88 years of age and he was a founding member of the Easton Racquet Club of Easton, Ct. He was also an avid golfer and played as recently as last year; he was a member at the Golf Club of Avon, in Avon, Ct, Bent Tree Country Club in Sarasota, FL and Eastward Ho! in Chatham, MA. In retirement, Bill volunteered for many years at the Chatham Historical Society as well as The Chatham Railroad Museum. He was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Chatham and was a past Deacon in the church.
Bill was predeceased by Winnie in 2001, his wife of 57 years, and is survived by Lila Zale of Chatham, MA, whom he married in 2012. He is also survived by his daughter Suzanne (Hamilton) and husband Dean of Chatham, MA (Jennifer, Jeffrey, Melissa, Amanda), and three sons; Bill and wife Nancy of Bethlehem, CT (Billy, Bryan, Melinda), Greg and wife Lynn of Hopkinton, NH (Peter, Katherine, Susan) and Chris and wife Karen of Darien, CT (Kirsty, Madison). Bill’s twelve grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren brought him great pride and extreme joy. A true gentleman, he will be greatly missed for his love of life, keen sense of humor, and his soft manner.
There will be a memorial service held at 2:00 pm on July 8, 2015 at the First Congregational Church of Chatham, 650 Main Street, Chatham, MA 02633. Interment will be private.
