Alice Lucy Neuberger died peacefully on October 5, 2025, with her long-time friend and caregiver, Kim Tomashefski, by her side. Born on October 22, 1922, she was two weeks shy of her 103rd birthday. Alice is survived by her son Frances Neuberger, DVM; grandsons Luke Neuberger, Joshua Neuberger Allright and Daniel Neuberger Allright; and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frances Neuberger; parents Belardino and Michelina (Fioritto) Angelone; and sisters Lena Germano (Louis), Mary D’Avirro (Mario), Ida Dimarco (Phillip), and Annie D’Franco (Anthony, aka ‘Sonny’). She will be remembered fondly by her surviving nieces, nephews, and many great nieces and nephews.
Alice began working after high school in the toy department at the May Company in downtown Cleveland. She had hopes of fulfilling her love of fashion by becoming a buyer in the dress department. Instead, she answered the call of duty during WWII by working first for a manufacturing company and then at Picker X-Ray. At a job fair, she signed up to work in the mail room for a company that would become TRW, Inc. She continued working at this company diligently and, with ongoing training and promotions, ultimately worked in the accounting office until her retirement in the mid- 1980s.
Alice remained busy during her retirement years. She loved to cook, travel the world with TRW’s Travel Club and socialize with friends. Wherever she resided, she found friends to play canasta, bingo, or enjoy a good meal. She also loved to play bocce at the Italian American Club and enjoyed bowling. She remained in contact with her close childhood friends until their passing. She never lost interest in fashion and was known to dress to the nines every day. She was proud of her collections and fashion sense. She impressed many by her youthful appearance and style well into her later years.
Alice, known by many as Auntie Elsie, was proud of her family. She shared many stories of her parents, her sisters and growing up on the Cleveland-Euclid border. A devoted wife and mother, she was most proud of her son, a world-renowned veterinarian. She loved her time visiting him and his sons while they lived in New Zealand. Her surprise 100th birthday celebration was a proud moment when a number of friends and family traveled to Maryland to be with her for the momentous occasion. Her last years were spent at The Village of St. Edward in Fairlawn. Here she enjoyed her own apartment in Independent Living and continued to play canasta and bingo. She made a number of friends who were sure to visit with her when she became ill. The family is grateful for them and the staff at St. Edward, her aides, the hospice staff, and all those who provided her with attentive care, especially Kim.
Alice will be remembered and celebrated with a funeral Mass on what would have been her 103rd birthday, October 22, 2025, at 1:00pm in the Mary Chapel at The Village of St. Edward Fairlawn, 3125 Smith Rd., Fairlawn, OH 44333. A celebration of life will follow at 2:00pm.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to a charity of choice contributing to the research, prevention or treatment of cancer.
