

Having spent much of his life in Lake County, Mal attended Collinwood High School of Cleveland, Ohio. Mal served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, from June 1944 until August 1946.
He attended the former Fenn College, what is now Cleveland State University, learning civil and Architectural Engineering. Mal could be found on many construction building sites leading each site with his expertise as the Field Engineer. He was a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church of Mentor, Ohio.
In his younger days Mal loved playing baseball, even having received an invitation to try-out for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Mal's fascination with building didn't end with work, he built intricate town scape for his HO trains. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, dancing, and singing, with his strong steady voice. Mal was a master at telling stories and was ready to entertain with that next story, many times making up adventures with Doris Morris to keep his subjects captivated.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of twenty years Ethel Ann (Troyan); a sister, Jayne Playgens; his long-time companion Frances Kurowski, and dear friend Mitsy Sands. Survivors include his two children, Elizabeth J. (Richard) Ruggerio of Kirtland, Ohio, and Malcolm "Mike" H. (Debbra) Shields, III, of Aurora, Ohio; stepson, David (Mary Kay) Forster; eight grandchildren, Lisa, Michele, Gina, Rachel, Matthew, Colin, Brian, and Sarah; fourteen great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 17, 2025, at 5:00 PM at Gattozzi and Son Funeral Home, 12524 Chillicothe, Road, Chesterland, Ohio. Calling hours will be held on Friday, October 17th from 3:00 PM until the time of services.
