

Alice Margaret Peterson (Haitz), age 95, of the North Center neighborhood in Chicago, passed into the presence of the Lord on Tuesday, October 4, 2016. She died peacefully, surrounded by family, in her home of 94 years.
Alice was the youngest of six, born on October 7, 1920, on Melrose St. in Chicago to Ludwig and Anna (Riemer) Haitz. Alice attended Alexander Graham Bell Grammar School and Lakeview High School. She started working to help her family during the Great Depression as a comptometer operator at Butler Brothers. She later served as an administrative assistant at the Board of Education, until her retirement in 1988. She was an active member of Bethany United Church of Christ and enjoyed reading, sewing, playing piano, baking and tenderly caring for her family and friends.
Alice is survived by her daughter, Victoria Herbert (Gary), granddaughter, Arden Schuman, grandson, Thomas Herbert, and many nieces and nephews to whom she was affectionately known as "Aunt Ally." Alice was preceded in death by her husband Otto Peterson and her five siblings, Elizabeth (Scheib), Irma (Tripp), Kurt, Helen (Scheib) and Ann (Eltoft).
A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held on Monday, October 10, at 1:00 p.m. at Bethany United Church of Christ at 4250 N. Paulina in Chicago with Rev. Vince Amlin and Rev. Sally Scheib officiating. Visitation will precede the service from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow at Rosehill Cemetery in Chicago. Flowers may be sent to Bethany United Church of Christ or donations may be made in honor of Alice to the Salvation Army.
