Arquelia Raquel Rodriguez, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully after a fairly quick battle with cancer on October 26, 2025, at the age of 79. Born in Orocovis, Puerto Rico, she was the daughter of Amelia Ortiz and Francisco Rodriguez.
A strong-willed and fiercely loving woman, Arquelia moved from Puerto Rico to Chicago as a single mother determined to build a better life for her family. Through resilience, courage, and sacrifice, she raised her children with unwavering devotion and ensured they had opportunities she never did. She worked for the City of Chicago for over 20 years before retiring to enjoy precious time with her family. Arquelia was known for her generous heart and vibrant spirit. She adored her grandchildren and played an important role in raising them. Throughout her life, she shared her strength, love, and presence with her family — often living with her daughter Denisse, where her warmth, music, and favorite meals filled the home. She loved hosting gatherings, celebrating life, and filling every space she lived in with laughter, love, and the comfort of family.
She carried her island roots close to her heart, and would share stories of her favorite beach in Luquillo, Puerto Rico, where she found peace and happiness in her younger years. In her final weeks, the voices of Marc Anthony and Grupo Niche filled her space, bringing her comfort and reminding her family of the rhythms she loved.
Arquelia is survived by her children Hector Morales, Fres Oquendo (Stacey Oquendo), Henry Oquendo (Tamara Oquendo), and Denisse Hernandez; her grandchildren Leonar Olivares (Sergio Olivares), Maya Oquendo, Naeem Oquendo, Solomon Oquendo, Nilka Hernandez (Raymond Bethell), Fres Oquendo Jr., Jada Oquendo Mugavero (Tyler Mugavero), Jaelyn Williams, Heniek Oquendo, Isabella Oquendo, Ethan Algarin, Catalina Oquendo, Liam Oquendo, and Riley Oquendo; and her great-grandchildren Lana Olivares, Santino Olivares, Skylar Bethell, and Cannon Oquendo.
She is also survived by her sisters Maria Frades and Sonia Rodriguez.
She is preceded in death by her grandson Henry Oquendo Jr. and her brothers Luis Rodriguez, Rafael Frades, and Victor Frades.
Her legacy lives forever in the strength, unity, and love of the family she built.
“Mom, your sacrifices gave us everything. Your strength shaped us, your love carried us, and your wisdom guides us still. We will honor you always.”
Arquelia will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all who knew and loved her.
