I was 11 when I first met David, I lived in an apartment building directly behind the ally from the Fourth Congressional Church. David approached my cousins and I sitting out in front of the church one day and asked if we wanted to start a basketball team. David took us off the streets and gave us a place to go and belong. David taught us kids how to fish, I remember the great times we all had with him on the lake, I even won a fishing tournament David sponsored though the church, he was a wonderful human being. I live in Florida now, and for many years I have tried to find David on social media. I just wanted to thank David for taking us kids off the streets of Chicago. I was never able find David on social media until today, when I saw his obituary, my heart sank, I sat in my office in silence. I thought of all the times David was there for us kids, making sure we always had some type of activity to do at the church, now I know, David was just trying to keep us busy and off the streets. I am now 55 years old, I live in Florida with my wife, five (5) daughters and twelve (12) grandchildren. I truly believe that David’s kindness changed my life forever, I can only imagine what would have become of me if he had not engaged us that day. Everyone has that one person in their lives that they can say made a difference for them, David was that person to me. Rest in peace my friend and thank you. 

David Henry was generous and loyal to faculty and students alike--in special education as well as psychology, psychiatry, and public health. As we speak, I'm revising an article following his sage advice. I'm so sorry that he left us so soon, and my thoughts and prayers are with his family.

My thoughts and prayers are with Mary and MANY family members and friends.  I enjoyed David's leadership on an endless variety of topics at Immanuel Lutheran study groups.  In addition he and Mary were simply very good friends.  I am thankful for the opportunity to have had that friendship.

My deepest sympathy to Mary and the whole family for the loose of pastor Henry, believing in God that He is the resurrection and the life.

David was a great mentor to me. Always kind and inspiring. I am honored to have known him.

Deeply saddened today to learn UIC SPH lost one of its brightest stars. David Henry was my mentor on a challenging work project. I was extremely fortunate not only to tap into his brilliant mind but also into the encouragement and equanimity that flowed effortlessly from his very presence. His humility and humor always put everyone at ease and just by doing what he did best, he inspired me to be a better public health servant. I will never forget this man and will always think of him as a role model. My thoughts are with his family who I'm sure are missing him deeply.

David was a great guy and one of the most humble and caring people I have ever met.  It was an honor working with him during the years of the MACs Project and afterwards on various projects.  I will miss as will many others at UIC.  David, you had a profound impact on the lives of many - we will miss you.

Dave was a treasured mentor and friend. He guided me through many tough points in grad school and graciously did my PhD hooding at graduation. He was a kind and generous soul who could teach with the patience of Job. But, most memorable to me, are the hundreds of hours simply talking about every topic you could imagine - whatever the topic, he knew a bit... and quite often a lot, and he always had such enthusiasm for thinking things through and thinking outside of the box. He was all the very best one could hope for in a mentor and teacher. I hope it might bring you comfort to know that something of his spirit lives on in those of us who had the chance to work under his guidance.

Dave Henry spoke the word of God over me as an adolescent and teenager. I'm positive those blessings years ago are still bearing fruit to this day. Him and his wife Mary were a great blessing to the Holstein family.

My prayers go to all the Henry family on the passing of Dr Rev Dave Henry, a great man,mentor,husband,father and friend. I met Rev Dave at 4 th congregations church through Mark Holstein. My prayers are with u all

He was brilliant and kind, and funny too. Working with him was such a pleasure because he cared so much about what he did and about helping others who wanted to learn what he knew. My deepest sympathy to you for saying goodbye to such a truly spiritual human being. We will miss him.

We would like to send our sympathy to Dave's family- we were so saddened to hear that he had passed away.  Both of us met Dave as graduate students while attending University of Illinois at Chicago, and want his family to know what a fantastic mentor he was.  

Dave served on all three of my (Jenna's) major committees during my time in graduate school (MA, preliminary exam, and dissertation).  He also was one of my sponsors on an NIMH postdoctoral training grant.  I'll never forget his patience, intellectual curiosity, and openness.  I could bring my hardest, craziest statistical methods puzzles to him and he was always willing to try to help me solve them.  Now that I'm mentoring graduate students of my own at Michigan State University, I often think about and model my own mentorship after the mentorship I received from Dave.

Dave also invited both of us to participate in Moo shu statistics lunches along with Lou Fogg, Mike Schoeny, and several other grad students, interns, and postdocs.  We have lots of fond memories of these lunches and have often credited them with adding in our development of statistical techniques over the years.

We will truly miss Dave.

Dear Mary-Deepest sympathy.  It's hard to believe i won't be seeing his bright smile and hear his wonderful voice.  He will be sorely missed as a colleague and as a friend.

Dear Mary, I offer my deepest condolences for the loss of your beloved husband. My folks are Don & Barbara Mullen. I remember (from the late 70's) a story you and David recanted one day: you would drive around and squirt water guns at unsuspecting people in other cars and no one could figure out where it was coming from. We were rolling with laughter hearing your escapes. You two also came rescue my brother Bill and me in the middle of th night one weekend when our car was towed while we were at a concert downtown. Your time together shows the incredible love soulmates share.
