Ms. Keating was THE BEST. An absolute blessing to my Christian Fenger H.S. and our community at large.  She worked diligently to ensure that we were college bound. I am who I am because of her and Tosca Mcginley

I pray someone in her family has inherited her mantle.

I loved her, and I was so sad to find out about losing her. I worked for her coming to her home to do computer work. I felt so, comfortable with her, like I knew her my whole life, even though I have only known her a few years. She had a real authentic presence of love, I could talk to her about anything. She was safe. She will be missed.

Aunt Dolores had a profound impact on my life in so many ways and she shaped a lot of who I am today. She inspired and fostered so many of my hobbies and interests throughout the years, including my love of baking, the theater, reading, and traveling. Aunt Dolores took me to see several Broadway musicals in Downtown Chicago, including one of my all-time favorites—Wicked (which we went together to see a few times). She also bought me most of my copies of the Harry Potter books, which continue to be my all-time favorite books, and took me to see the first movie in theater. Aunt Dolores loved to travel. Sometimes we had the chance to do that together, including traveling to Ireland, Milwaukee, and Galena together. But more often she loved to share stories and souvenirs from other places she had traveled to. She was so excited that I also loved to travel and was always asking where I was headed next. 

Obviously, this reflection is very focused on my relationship with my aunt, but I think it would be a disservice to not acknowledge all the other important people in her life, including her incredible friends, family, stock club members, coworkers, students, and fellow parishioners. She cared so much about each of you. Every time I spoke with her, she shared about other people in her life. In our last visit together, she received so many phone calls from people checking in with her that the nurse commented on how popular she was. She loved and cared so deeply for the people in her life. 

I imagine when Aunt Dolores passed she was greeted by so many people who loved her, including her parents, brother Bob, boxer Sandy, and dear friends and family members who went before her. That brings me a lot of comfort. 

I miss you, Aunt Dolores. Thanks for being the best godmother a girl could have asked for.

Aunt Dolores loved baking, and I think everyone will agree that she was an outstanding baker. Growing up, my brother Brendan and I would go to my aunt’s house every December to bake dozens and dozens of cookies. It was always so much fun. Her kitchen was filled with Christmas music, flour, and sprinkles everywhere. The only downside was that she was a strong believer in never eating cookie dough for fear of salmonella, so Brendan and I would have to sneak pieces when she would leave the room! These outings really inspired my own love of baking, which my aunt continued to foster over the years. She bought me my Kitchen Aid Mixer. I asked for it one Christmas without understanding how expensive it cost. That didn’t matter to her, though. She was so excited to share her love of baking with me AND her favorite color, because of course she had to get the mixer in her favorite color red. I’ll always think of her each time I use that mixer. 

Every Christmas morning as a child after we finished opening our gifts from Santa, we would call up Aunt Dolores to come over for breakfast. Once she moved to Edgewater, she began spending the night on Christmas Eve too. She always showed up in her Christmas-themed pajamas with big bags of presents for all of us. She was so excited to see us open our gifts and would insist we shouldn’t have gotten her anything in return. I’m so grateful for all my holiday memories with her.

Dolores Keating was a special lady and someone I’m very blessed to have had as a godmother. Dolores was not related to me by blood, but from the time I was born she was always “Aunt Dolores” and was just as much family as any other relative. Aunt Dolores has been present for all the big moments my life—good and bad. She was there for birthdays, holidays, graduations, and sacraments, but also there during hard times when I lost loved ones or was sick. It’s still hard to believe she won’t be there for future ones. I still can’t believe I won’t get another phone call, email, or visit with her, always ending with a “Love ya!” 

When I think of Aunt Dolores, I most often think of Christmas. Each St. Nicholas Day my family could each expect a Christmas ornament—usually Christopher Radko—carefully chosen to reflect our interests or a souvenir from one of her travels. Every holiday season I came to my Aunt Dolores’ house to help her put up her decorations. She was so happy to put her tree up. She took so much time unwrapping each ornament and telling stories about them, usually related to her travel. She also loved to keep her tree up long after the holidays were done because it made her happy and “it wasn’t hurting anyone!”
