

He graduated from Lane Tech and worked for the Chicago Public Schools as a stationary engineer.
Fred was a jack of all trades and was glad to help people with any problem. He was an amateur photographer and enjoyed traveling in the US, especially to historical sites and old western towns. He was an avid horse-racing fan, and enjoyed the intricacies of the sport.
Lovingly remembered by his sisters Letitia Challos (the late Thomas), and Diana Gilbertson (Richard), niece Laura Watts, nephews Scott Zydel, Christopher Challos, deceased brothers, Ronald (Anita Cudia) and Arthur, deceased parents, Frank Zydel and Lillian (Frackiewicz).
Visitation will be held at Malec & Sons Funeral Home, 6000 North Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60646 on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, from 4- 8 pm. Prayers will be held at 7pm.
Final Viewing will take place at Malec & Sons Funeral Home Wednesday, April 29, 2026, from 8:30 am to 9:15 am. Following a funeral mass will be held at St. Hyacinth Basilica, 3635 W George St, Chicago, IL 60618 at 10 am. Committal Service will follow at St Adalbert Catholic Cemetery & Mausoleums, 6800 N Milwaukee Ave, Niles, IL 60714.
