He was born in Alaska to Leo William Kreiner and Dorothy (Smegel) Kreiner and spent his formative years in Montana before moving to Illinois. Gary is survived by his devoted wife, Maureen "Mo". They were married for over 31 years. Gary is also survived by his sons, Jeff (Missy) and Cary (Sheri); his cherished grandchildren, Jodi (Derick), Taylor, Maddie, and David; his great-grandson, Asher; his sisters Sherry, Meg, and Joyce (Doug); numerous nieces, nephews, and many loving relatives, friends, and his beloved cat, Rascal.
A true Renaissance man, Gary had a wide array of talents that spanned from painting to storytelling, and even to crafting a one-of-a-kind wooden board game. He had a gift for spinning captivating tales and brought joy to everyone around him with his sharp wit and infectious sense of humor. His love for the outdoors was boundless—whether it was biking, fishing, metal detecting, rock collecting, or tending to their beloved garden alongside Mo, Gary found peace and happiness in nature.
Gary proudly served in the Navy during the Vietnam War, a chapter of his life that shaped his strength and character. For over 46 years, he worked as an optician at Greenspan Optometric Associates, leaving a mark on the many lives he touched with his expertise and kindness.
Gary’s spirit will continue to inspire all who knew him, and he will be deeply missed. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Gary's name to Elim Adult Services or Bethshan Association.
A celebration of Gary’s life will be held on Saturday May 10th, 2025 with a visitation beginning at 9:00am until 10:00am with a Mass of Christian burial to immediately follow at St. Cajetan Catholic Church, 2447 W. 112th Street Chicago, IL 60655.
