Knew you John from he moment you started GHS..will miss you my friend...

I kept thinking I would come to visit you in Chicago. I waited to long obviously. I have thought of you often over the years. You were so much fun especially the year my wife and I returned to Huntsville. You made sure we had a good time even though that was a tragic year for your family with your father having been killed. I can tell you this I will not forget you. Somehow your humor and approach to life made a difference in my life.

John, you could make me laugh like no one else could or ever has. I still have the Grissom High School annual when you were a freshman. Man, were you goofy looking. Ha! Boy, am I ever the better person for you being in my life. I can still hear your laugh today. My heart is truly broken and I will love you always.

The last time I saw John, we were at a club in Seattle with my husband Ed, my brother Dave and his wife Gigi.  John and I danced the night away. Oh what fun he was!

John was a good friend through High School and beyond.  Very talented actor, sadly we lost touch, expected to hear of him on Broadway, not an obituary.  He will be missed.  Andy Hawkins

John, I have too many great memories of our lives together as brothers. Even though we were very different, we shared so many great times with family and friends that it is hard to sort thru them all. The one thing that always came thru to me was your unswerving sense of humor and your amazing, raucous laughter. It is not stilled, nor will it ever be. I hear it every time I think of you.

We didn't know each other for very long, but I'm so grateful that we had the time that we did. Watching Zara has been an absolute pleasure, and I'm so thankful to have had her in my life. I'm so glad I was able to be there for her, and my hope is that you know she was taken care of. You were such a wonderful parent to her - you will always have a place in her heart. And yes, the "little demon" has been behaving herself beautifully.

John, It's been over 25 years since I've last seen you, but I'll always remember you as the funny, smart, and kind young man with whom I shared so many secrets and laughs while we negotiated the rocky road that is high school. A few weeks ago, I found an old note you'd passed me in class all those years ago; reading it brought tears to my eyes, as its contents exemplified what a caring and generous friend you were. I'll never forget you. Rest in peace, my friend...

John, you were my first friend and I will never forget how much fun we had climbing the mimosa tree in your back yard and making cookies with your sweet Mom.  I love your parents and you..although I have not seen you in years, you will always be a part of my fondest memories as a child. John, we attended all the early school years as good friends. Chaffee Elementary, Whitesburg Middle and Grissom High.... and like most school friendships you lose touch and life moves on. Thought of you many times over the years, you were always such a positive and affirmative person. I'm so sorry this is the way we reconnected, but couldn't let you go without telling others how great of a guy you were. God bless, we'll see you again someday.

I had the pleasure or working with John weekly on the Grissom High School Report that we did every Sunday night on the radio.  We had many laughs writing the script each Sunday and going to the radio station to record our report.  John was a great guy and will be missed.  Pam Morris Kipniss

John you gave me valuable information which helped Russell and I through a challenging beginning. I know you always loved him, how void you not......he is a wonderful man. We may not have always seen eye to eye but I know you had a big heart. When we see eachother again I hope we can look back on all the silliness and embrace eachother as friends and with open arms. I had written you on Face Book to tell you how much you have been missed and will be missed.
How I enjoyed our times together at Zane and Zara's.  You and Russell were a great working pair and such fun to work with.  You were so good with the public and the animals.  Every one felt special when they came into the shop.
Bill and I enjoyed our trip with you and Russell in Hawaii.  Victoria was so cute as she dragged you into the water over and over.  She so small and you so tall.  All laughed on the beach watching you.
Our family loved our Thanksgivings together and all the great food you cooked.  You were such fun to be with.  Our hearts are sad and we pray you are in a wonderful place.  Peace and love to you.  Gail & Bill Walsh

I met John the first year of our junior year in high school in Mr Dravecky's American History class.  We became fast friends.  John was fun, quirky, and kind.  He was the business manager for the literary magazine, seed, and he got us out of debt. He taught me how to drive a stick shift; he never got mad and he laughed at my ineptness. I always found it somewhat ironic that an individual named John Smith was voted "Senior Individuality."  John was, indeed, one of a kind.  After many years of not being in touch, we finally reconnected via FB, and I am so glad we did. I will miss you my friend.  I cherish the times we spent together, especially those hanging out in the kitchen at your parents' house.

Dear John, it is with a broken heart that I write.  To be loved and adored unconditionally is the treasure you gave me.  I am blessed to have decades of memories with you.  I miss you more than you could ever imagine.  Until we laugh again.......

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

John, you were a wonderful host for many memorable Thanksgiving dinners at the Chicago apartment you shared with Russell.  Even with 10 or 12 people and 2 or 3 dogs there, and a bursting turkey brining bag you remained level headed, gracious and considerate of us all.  And still produced a delicious, abundant feast.  We loved our trip to China with you, seeing places you knew, and exploring others you had never seen, the Bell Tower, the Drum Tower, and finally finding the little restaurant where we enjoyed a delicious Peking Duck.  We vividly remember your seeking solace at the Temple of Heaven, we hope you found it.   We treasure those memories.  You were very generous, kind and thoughtful, with a realistic view of the world, a gift for story telling, and a great sense of humor.  We miss you.

I enjoyed visiting Russell and John in Chicago.  John was a very generous and interesting host.  He brought me some jewelry from China which I wear and enjoy.  I appreciate his good cooking and special cakes.  He was a steadfast friend and I'm sure he was a highly appreciated steward.  I'm sorry he has left us at such an early age.

John You only came into my life last April but you were the best and most caring and gentle man I have ever met, I'm going to miss you so much, so until I see you again bye for now my Southern gentleman,Woof

John, you were wonderful to my children and family. I can't believe you're gone. I will never forget you! I will always remember your contagious laugh and the fun times we've had over the years. We have been hit hard by your passing and we have always considered you family. I have always admired you - getting through so many hardships and keeping a positive attitude and focus, bouncing back strong. You're spirit will live in us forever! We love you!

I miss you John. You were a brother to me. I can't imagine my life without my best friend at my side.  This is all  surreal to me. But yet again, I can't imagine you having it any other way. You were home with your girl Zara.
