Lester J. Onyszko, of Chicago, passed away suddenly, but very peacefully, at the age of 77. He is preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Suzanna (Sobus) Onyszko, and his parents, Jan and Anna (Studniarska) Onyszko. Lester was raised in Warsaw, Poland, immigrated to the United States in time to attend Holy Trinity High School, and his engineering studies eventually landed him a job at Motorola, from which he retired. He is survived by his three children Monica (Edward Stankiewicz) Onyszko, Beata (Edward Brosius) Onyszko, and Jerry Onyszko. He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren Alaric, Fiona, Oskar and Luke, and will be lovingly remembered by his sister Joanna (Michael) Odehnal, nephew Greg (Paulina) Gogola, cousin George (Joan) Dubicki, sister-in-law Marysia Sekeres, nephew Andrew (Maki) Sekeres, niece Adriana Sekeres, and many, many relatives and friends both local and abroad.
Lester will be most remembered for his sense of humor and willingness to help others, whether it be driving people to doctor appointments and the airport, watering plants for family on vacation, fixing things, or ripping out shrubbery with his SUV. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing hockey at Humboldt Park, and also joined the Motorola volleyball league. He had an interest in vehicles and owned a vintage Volvo, motorcycle, and boat. In recent years, he tended to his mother, enjoyed lunching with his cousin George, visiting his cousin Alice, and playfully bothering his sister-in-law Marysia. He was proud of his homemade food creations, like his better-than-Gatorade drink, aptly named Lester-Ade, and the cheese he accidentally made in his garage. Dziadek always found time to entertain his grandchildren, and hand-deliver birthday cards on exact dates. He often traveled to Wisconsin to visit family. Goodbyes from Tata frequently included his signature advice to “Look out for the other guy.” We wish we could have celebrated together for decades more with good food, cake and Brandy Manhattans.
