Born in Peñuelas, Puerto Rico, to Felicita Rodriguez and Angel Rodriguez, Freddy was the sixth of eight children. Freddy came to Chicago from Puerto Rico at the age of 19. Freddy lived in various neighborhoods in Chicago until he found his home in Humboldt Park, a neighborhood that would hold special significance as the place where he met his beloved wife, Haydee Rodriguez (Rivera), enduring a love story that spanned 57 years.
Freddy’s legacy continues through his devoted children: Luis A. Rodriguez, Jr. “Freddy” (JoAnn), Evelyn “Gigi” Melendez, Rosa Ybarra, Luis E. Rodriguez “Ricky”, Leida Rodriguez-Hill (Ramon), Luis A. Rodriguez “Shaggy” (Dawn), and Lizzette Rodriguez. He was a cherished grandfather to Nicholas (Carmen), Jennifer (Rod), Luis Jr., Stephanie (Jariel), Freddie (Lindsey), Ali, Julio, Cristian, Andrew, Joshua, Marissa, and Haylee, and a loving great-grandfather to Julian, Sydney, Sophia, Jackson, Jayden, and Liam.
Freddy worked at Williams Electronics for 29 years. First on the assembly line and then as a Quality Control Inspector, a career he retired from after nearly three decades of service. If you have ever played pinball at an arcade, chances are that Freddy may have tested that machine before it left the factory.
Freddy’s life was defined by his immense love for his family and friends. He was the life of every party, known for his vibrant spirit and his moves on the dance floor and, occasionally, a table top. He enjoyed listening to the sounds of boleros, especially Felipe Rodriguez. He was a good man, who was also known to be strict, but underneath it all, he was soft-hearted, a characteristic which became very evident when his grandchildren were present.
A lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs, Freddy also found joy in the simple pleasures - he loved to work on word search puzzles, work in his backyard, and was our Mr. Fix-it!
Freddy’s presence will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will forever be etched in the hearts of his family and friends.
