Maria Antonia Guatelara Geary, a beloved wife, sister, aunt, friend, and pillar of her community, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2026 at the age of 82. A proud first-generation immigrant from the Philippines, she lived a life defined by faith, service, and deep devotion to family and community.
Born in Manjuyod, Negros Oriental, Philippines, Tonette, as most people call her, carried with her a strong sense of Filipino values—hospitality, generosity, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to others. She immigrated to the United States in the 1960’s, where she built a life rooted in hard work, perseverance, and gratitude for the opportunities of her adopted home, while always remaining deeply connected to her heritage. She devoted most of her nursing career at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center where she worked for more than 30 years.
Her faith was the cornerstone of her life. An active and devoted member of Faith Community Presbyterian Church, Tonette gave generously of her time and talents through church ministries, events, and outreach. She found great joy in worship, fellowship, and serving others, and her quiet strength and kindness left a lasting impact on her church community.
Tonette was also immensely proud of her education and remained highly engaged with her school alumni community. She was a dedicated and enthusiastic member of the Silliman University alumni association, where she fostered lifelong friendships, supported fellow alumni, and worked tirelessly to strengthen the bonds between generations. Her commitment reflected her belief in education, community, and giving back.
Above all, Tonette cherished her family. She was a loving wife, sister, aunt, and mentor, always ready with wise counsel, encouragement, and a warm smile. She took great pride in the accomplishments of her nieces and nephews and was a steady source of love and support in their lives.
Tonette is survived by her husband Timothy Geary, brothers Ray Fernando Guatelara and wife Myrna Fontelo Guatelara, Jesfer Guatelara and wife Alma Dolar Guatelara, sisters Girlie Guatelara Ramo, Corinne Guatelara Tabua, Angelina Guatelara Olivares and husband Antonio Olivares, and Darlene Guatelara, along with 14 nephews and nieces. She is reunited in eternal rest with her parents Fernando Militar Guatelara and Jesusa Ceriales Guatelara.
Her life was a testament to faith, service, and love—a bridge between cultures, generations, and communities. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
There will be no wake or viewing, but a celebration of life will be held on January 24, 2026 at 3 pm at Faith Community Presbyterian Church. Food will be served afterwards.
