Nancy June Bechtol (née Schaefer), age 75, passed away on August 15, 2025, in Chicago, Illinois. Born on June 24, 1950, in the same city she called home throughout her life, Nancy left an indelible mark on the cultural and educational fabric of Chicago.
A lifelong learner and passionate educator, Nancy earned a Bachelor of Art and Education from Roosevelt University. She went on to receive a Master of Art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a Master of Education from Loyola University. Her academic pursuits reflected her deep commitment to both artistic expression and the transformative power of education.
Nancy began her professional journey as an educator with Chicago Public Schools, where she taught for ten years. Her dedication to public service continued as she transitioned into arts administration with the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, serving as an associate grants administrator. She later joined the Chicago Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, where her advocacy and compassion helped shape inclusive policies and programs. In the final chapter of her career, Nancy returned to teaching—this time at the collegiate level—sharing her knowledge and passion with students at the Illinois Institute of Art.
Throughout her life, Nancy was also a prolific fine artist and videographer. Her creative spirit never waned; even in her later years, she continued to produce new works daily. A proud member of the Chicago Society of Artists, Nancy’s work reached international audiences—most notably when one of her feature-length documentaries was selected for inclusion at the Cannes Film Festival in the Documentary category.
Nancy’s life was grounded not only in art and education but also in faith. A devout Catholic and deeply spiritual person, she found joy and purpose within her parish community. Known affectionately as a “church grandparent,” she offered warmth and guidance to several families within her congregation.
She is survived by her beloved husband, David Bechtol; her sister, Mary Frances Meyer; her brother, James Schaefer; and her nephews Jeffery Meyer and Mark Meyer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lesley Schaefer and Vera Schaefer (Waterloo), and Scott Meyer (nephew).
Nancy will be remembered as a warm-hearted soul whose life was defined by creativity, compassion, activism, and unwavering dedication to others. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
