Dear Sutphins, 
Please accept my condolences.  I have fond childhood memories of Rhett in grade school and carpooling around San Diego.
  

Today I found his name in a case study for Jenkins, a popular software tool.  I write now because I am reminded that people still make impressions on the world through their interactions that live on after death, whether it's a face-to-face with a single person or digitally to a giant audience.

This is Pravesh. I am deeply saddened to learn about this and quite frankly this has come as a shock to me. Rhett and I worked together for CareerBuilder for a couple of projects and his knowledge, skill and demeanor  were to the highest standards. Rest in peace.

Dear Sutphin Family,

I am very sorry for your loss.

Rhett and I were friends in middle school in La Jolla.  We shared a love of computers and a Latin class in which Rhett was the star pupil.  In Latin, Rhett sat against the right wall, third seat from the front.  The rest of us clustered around him hoping he would discreetly help us when we were stuck or, vainly, that his brilliance would osmote to us somehow.

Rhett's brilliance was quite necessary as the Magister, probably drawing from Roman tradition, would punish us with awkward silences when our combined knowledge failed us.  Rhett always knew the answer and would humbly save us when we were most in need.  Without Rhett, the rest of us might still be there, squirming in our seats and avoiding eye contact!

Although Rhett's intellect was deep and unmistakable, his kindness and humility were, for me, his first trait.  Especially at middle-school age, most students in possession of Rhett's abilities would flaunt them or at least develop cynicism over time.  Not so Rhett.  He had a gentle way of letting us learn and the Magister teach.  He balanced care, thoughtfulness, humility and self awareness in a way seldom achieved and well beyond his years.  He was great and he was good.  He was a very special person.

Aeneas exclaims, "sunt lacrimae rerum et mentem mortalia tangunt" as he is confronted with the loss of his friends in war.  This phrase has come to represent the feeling of isolation that loss creates, the inability to communicate and share the pain of loss.  While you must be going through terrible pain, I hope you will know that many other people feel the same way about Rhett and, like you, will always keep him in their hearts.

This is Supreeth from India, who worked with Rhett for quite some time on a project during the years 2013-14. He was a gem of a person and very cordial to work with. I met him while I was in Chicago at that time and found him to be extremely efficient and highly learned & skilled at his work. May God give your family strength to come over this loss.
