

Sonya Carter Murray (née Newman), of Chicago, passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 18th, 2024. She was 89. Mrs. Murray was born on December 3, 1934, in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois to Alice Elizabeth Carter and Nathan Newman. A 1949 graduate of Helen C. Peirce Elementary School and a 1953 graduate of Nicholas Senn High School, Mrs. Murray lived most of her life in the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago. She loved having coffee at Augie’s, eating dinner at Calo, and shopping on Clark Street.
As a parishioner of St. Gregory the Great Church for more than 50 years, she willingly volunteered at parish activities including the carnival, bingo, and the annual parish Mardi Gras. After her husband died, Mrs. Murray worked for Northside Catholic Academy (St. Gregory Campus), running the after-school care program among her other responsibilities.
Mrs. Murray was predeceased by her husband, Harold, to whom she was married for 13 years, and by her stepson, Patrick. She is survived by her daughter, Colleen Murray (Anthony Harris), her son, William Murray (Merriah) her two grandchildren, Gracin and Ashton, and many wonderful friends.
A visitation for Sonya to be held on Friday, August 23rd, 2024, at St. Gregory the Great Church, 5545 North Paulina Avenue, Chicago, IL 60640 from 10am until 11am. A funeral mass to follow at 11am. Interment immediately following the mass at Montrose Cemetery, 5400 North Pulaski Road, Chicago, IL 60630.
