Life is a train we all must ride. It starts in the same place. It ends in the same place. Yet we all make different stops along the way. On July 15th 2024 David George Stammers’ train completed a journey 88 years long, leaving those who were lucky enough to get a seat beside him with irreplaceable memories and full hearts.
His journey started on September 23rd 1935. David was the youngest of 5 children (Margret, Ernest, Keith and Norman) born to Frank and Susan Stammers in Winnipeg Manitoba. David now joins his wife Geraldine and son Kimm and is survived by his 3 children, Debbie, Cheryl and Kimberly, 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
As David’s journey unfolded he learned resilience. He modelled unrelenting dedication to building a better self and in doing so helped so many others get on and stay on the right track. A pillar of strength. A role model. He was inspiring, lead with a pure heart and consistently demonstrated his desire to help and care for others. David was and still is responsible for a portion of many people’s happiness. David always had a way of putting things together. Whether it was wiring an appliance, building a basement model train empire or adding a couple points here and there to his score in a game (which Geri always promptly called him out on) you could always count on him to figure it out or at least show up for a visit at lunch (or dinner) time.
Depending on how one knew David, Dad, Papa or Great Papa, one’s memories will look different and although his earth bound train has reached the station, we will always appreciate the gifts that he so eagerly gave us and the love we all are so grateful to have experienced. Although we all still have the “highball” we will never forget the part of our journey we shared with David.
