Dorothy was born August 30, 1938 and grew up on Mayne Island.
Dorothy's family member's have a long history on this small island. Her family worked hard at farming. Dorothy and her sister Arlene enjoyed the animals and Dorothy enjoyed riding the tractor with her father. They had tomato greenhouses, their crops were shipped to Vancouver and sold in markets. The school she attended was a one room school house for all grades.
At the age of 16, she moved to Vancouver, attended Vancouver Technical College where she learned typing and book keeping skills. At the age of 19 she married and began her family. She was a devoted mother to Penny and Donald, raising them with love and unwavering support.
In 1976 she brought her parents from Mayne Island to live with her family in Aldergrove, BC, as they were aging and needed access to better medical care. In 1980 Dorothy moved her family to Sechelt, BC. In Sechelt she saw her grandchildren born starting in 1983. The thing that was most profound was she found her calling to care for the elderly and got her Certificate as a Care Aid and worked at Shorncliffe Intermediate Care Facility. She was dearly loved by staff and residents alike.
After retirement she decided in 2004 to relocate to Chilliwack, where she spent the last years of her life.
Dorothy’s hobbies were gardening, sewing, crochet puzzles and baking. Her family and friends enjoyed her fresh baked bread, cinnamon buns cookies, cakes.
Over the years Dorothy loved her pets, beloved cats and dogs, but most recently she got joy from her families pets. Teddy, Bruce and Sparky.
Dorothy’s kindness, grace, endless energy and quiet strength will be forever missed but never forgotten. Her life was a testament to love, generosity, compassion and selflessness.
Dorothy was a woman known for her servant heart and her deep, abiding love for her family and friends. Her warm spirit touched the lives of all who knew her. She found great joy in her family, and her legacy lives on through her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A private service for close family and friends will be held at the family’s request.
The family wishes to send a special thank you to Dr. Dara Donelly and Dr. Julia Bright and the kind staff at Cedar Family Practice, the kind and attentive Palliative Home Care Team, Pam and Stuart, and the extraordinary staff at the Cascade Hospice in Chilliwack for their care and compassion.
