It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas Edward Callander, age 77, on December 17, 2020. After a battle with cancer, Doug died peacefully at home in Chilliwack with his wife and grandchildren by his bedside.
Doug was born in Montreal on February 4, 1943 to George and Patricia Callander. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sandra, his grandson Dave, granddaughter Terri (Shane) and great granddaughter Brynleigh. Also cousins Ron (Barbara), Lori (Larry), niece Sandy (Dan) and special friends John and Wendy. Doug was predeceased by his parents and by his son Dave.
After a brief stint in the Air Force, Doug entered the telephone industry, in which he worked in London, Ont, Montreal, Toronto, Richmond and finally Langley, B.C. He loved the repair portion of the business, and enjoyed finding the problem and fixing it.
The essence of Doug was his kindness. He never forgot what he had been taught when young “if you can’t find anything good to say about somebody, don’t say anything.” Everybody liked Doug and many loved him. His smile and good humour were always part of him. Doug loved sports, he was proud of achieving ‘senior athlete of the year in school’ and through the years he played hockey, baseball, golf and was good at it all. He even got into go-cart racing with his son in his late 30’s. Doug enjoyed being competitive. He loved to beat everyone at Trivial Pursuit (due to an amazing memory) and enjoyed competing with his wife at Sudoko or computer solitaire. Doug loved to have fun, to go to the casino, to a party, to laugh and he enjoyed telling jokes (which became known as ‘Grampy jokes’) and stories of his youth to his grandchildren.
