Florrie (Flo) will be missed and lovingly remembered by her son, Robert (Margaret) Morgan; daughter, Christine (James) Milne; grandchildren, Alyssa Campbell, Jennifer (Elias) Shantz, and Thomas Milne; and great-grandchildren, Cacherel and Lachlan Campbell.
Florrie was predeceased by her husband and best friend, Ernie Morgan; her parents, Henry and Daisy Dixon; older sister, Daisy Burrill; and four older brothers, Harry, William, Arthur and George, all from England.
Growing up in London, England, during WWII, and being the youngest of six children, mum had many exciting and sometimes scary stories to share of her adventures in girls' school, working in London and excursions to the countryside and seaside, travelling on the "tube" or her favourite mode of travel, her bike.
What started as knitting for soldiers away at war, became a lifelong passion for working with all kinds of wool and creating challenging patterns; wonderful gifts for family and friends.
Mum shared with and passed on to her family many of the loves she brought with her from England; like her love of gardening, especially flowers. Mum loved the ocean and never tired of walking the sand, popping seaweed and checking tide pools for little creatures; then watching the waves for seals and whales. Mum loved music and like her siblings, taught herself to play an instrument - she chose the piano, others played the harp, clarinet, saxophone and concertina. She encouraged the children in her life to learn to play an instrument as a relaxing diversion to life's stresses. You would often hear mum singing while she worked and eager to dance if a 'big band' sound was on the radio. Peter, was Mum's four-legged childhood companion. She loved him dearly and this love for all creatures, but dogs in particular, continued throughout her life, never ceasing to bring her joy. The one love that mum shared with us and valiantly tried to pass on was that of English tradition, like the Royal family....yes that too. But mostly, the English Christmas traditions of mincemeat pies, fruitcake and plum pudding! Some of us left home ...without them!
In 1944, mum fell in love with a Canadian soldier on leave in London, Ernie Morgan. A short wartime romance and they married in 1945. Then the war ended and this English war-bride travelled two weeks by ship to Halifax, then by train to Outlook, Saskatchewan, in what Ernie had called "God's country" - no hot water, no indoor plumbing, no sidewalks, a wood stove and a bedroom at her mother-in-law's - but Ernie, the love of her life, was smiling and waving; there to pick her up and her Canadian adventures had begun. With her English determination and his Canadian charm, they built their home in Saskatchewan; celebrating sixty-eight wonderful years together, till his passing in February, 2014.
Working alongside dad in the Co-op Store, mum enjoyed taking care of their home and later raising their family. When we left home, mum's determination and need for independence saw her getting her driver's license and picking up a typewriter and teaching herself to type to prepare for an office job, which she got - to save for retirement.
Upon retiring, Flo and Ernie moved to the west coast. They continued to follow their favourite "Saskatchewan" sport of curling. Joining with other retirees, they participated in lawn and carpet bowling and bocce leagues, often taking home ribbons and trophies!
Mum and dad returned to Saskatchewan yearly, to visit family. Once again, mum, then as grandma and then as great-grandma, enjoyed bouncing children on her knees, singing nursery rhymes and reading bedtime stories from our family English storybooks. And....when the children travelled to grandma and granddad's house, the 'bunny' jar was always full of cookies to sneak!
Mum and dad shared the love of travelling Canada, although mum was the one who loved to drive, quite speedily, I might add. Packing their trailer or motorhome, mapping out their journey and, of course, with their dog at their side, they enjoyed many adventures coast to coast. Canada had definitely become mum's home!
