Mike was born in Kenora on January 28, 1970, the second of four close-knit siblings. He was a beautiful, ferociously intelligent, athletic, spirited boy with a great enthusiasm for life.
He struck out on his own early, restless and eager to experience the world.
As a child he lived in Kenora (and for a time "down East" in Southern Ontario) and then, as a young adult he headed West, living in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton (briefly back in Kenora) and in many other places while he was pipelining. Mike's final move was to Chilliwack, BC.
Mike's adventures took him far and wide starting with a month-long trip to California as a young child, and later a student exchange to Jersey with visits to France and to London. While in London the class was given some free time and Mike jumped on the Tube to go exploring (surely not what the chaperones had in mind) but he was never one to get lost and easily found his way back. He visited Costa Rica and most recently fulfilled a long-time dream of visiting Australia. Mike was a fan of road trips and has driven all over Western Canada countless times.
Though he had the intellect of a Rhodes Scholar, Mike was blue-collar to the core. He made his living in the Trades, settling into pipelining for many years. He was always a work-hard/play-hard kind of guy. He was an incredibly quick study and a hard worker, but as much the life of the party as the work crew.
Mike understood things quickly and easily, loved history, and was always up to date on politics and world events. He was well-known for his lifelong love of reading the newspaper. He loved animals and nature, guitars and books, but what he loved most was his family and friends.
If you asked Mike what the best thing he did in his life was, he would tell you it was his daughter Taylor.
He had such a heart for friends and the people in his life. If you loved him, rest assured, he loved you too. Mike wouldn't want you to be sad and if he could see you again, he would just want to reminisce about the times you had with him and would make you laugh just to see you smile, and so he could laugh too.
Mike is survived by his daughter Taylor Jacobson and his grandson Noah John as well as his parents, Connie and Gary Jacobson, and siblings Carla (Jim) Parnell, Karmen Jacobson and Phil Jacobson, nieces and nephews Jenn, Jake, Michaila, Julia, John, Franny, Fletcher, Ashton, Tyler as well as great nieces & nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins too numerous to mention.
In death Michael has been reunited with his Nana & Bumpa, Carl & Audrey Jacobson, his Grandpa Jim Davidson (whom he was especially close with) & Granny Gert, Aunt Trudy Smelko (nee Davidson) and his beloved dog Harley (Huck) is undoubtedly so happy to see him again.
There will be a Celebration of Mike's Life in Kenora this summer (date to be determined, please stay tuned.)
Mike touched a lot of people and his family would love to hear your stories with him. Please share them. Mike would love that.
