Nella was born in The Netherlands, the eldest of 8 children. She was 13 when WW2 was declared there, so her teenage years were marked by war. At age 21 she immigrated to Canada with her family and her fiancée Klaas. Together they built a life in Canada, found jobs, married in 1948, and raised 4 children.
Predeceased by Klaas in 2013 she is survived by her children, Rita Meerkerk (Henry), Nick Slootweg, Corinne Storteboom (John) & Martin Slootweg (Judy); 13 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 5 sisters.
With her flair for decorating and flower arranging she enjoyed being creative. She was an excellent seamstress, knitter and created beautiful needlepoints. She also loved a good game of Scrabble.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the care staff at Menno Place in Abbotsford where she spent the last year of her life.
A private family service and gathering will be held on September 23rd. In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation in her name to the BC Children’s Hospital.
