He is predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Sheila, and by his son Jerry in 1987. Sheila passed away in 2018, and though he soldiered on, he missed her every day since. He is at rest now with the love of his life.
Ron was dad to Carol, Jerry, Christine and Ian, and Poppy to Gordon, Megan, Alexis, Kayla, Carson, and Shayla, and step-Poppy to Claire and Sam.
Ron grew up in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, as one of 13 kids. He learned early how to work hard and not take anything for granted. He joined the armed forces at age 16 and quickly made an impression with his discipline and drive to succeed. He worked for many years as a Weapons Instructor and retired from the armed forces as a Warrant Officer in 1977. Ron was a member of the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment of Canada).
After his military career Ron worked for the Corrections Services of Canada where he retired in 1995.
Ron had a spirit of adventure always. He loved nothing more than to have a project and a plan. He travelled to many parts of the world during his military career, and then traveled for leisure with his wife in retirement. True to his spirit of adventure, Ron’s last escapade in his final few months was his new Sheltie puppy, who he named “Happy”, and true to his name, Happy gave Ron much love and happiness.
Those who knew him would say that Ron was an officer and a gentleman. He was a friend to many and loved telling stories of his many experiences to all who would join him for “happy hour”.
He spent his last days surrounded by family and close friends. Dad left us to walk the green, green grass of home, which for him, always was Sheila.
Special thanks to friends Scott and Kathy, and to his niece Florence who were such a big support to him in these last few years.
