On July 21, 1938, Stanley Gordon Guard was born to proud parents Gordon and Marvel in a rustic log cabin in the middle of nowhere, Norbuck Alberta. Stan was the third of five children but the first of the three musketeers; Stan (1938), Larry (1940) and Verle (1944). Jim (1928) and Clarice (1930) his elder siblings were thrilled he came along.
His passions in life were faith, family , music, and helping others. His father instilled a strong work ethic, while his mother prayed one of her children would go into the ministry. That blessing fell over Stan. At a service his mother requested he attend with her, Stan asked Jesus into his heart and never looked back.
In 1959, he left Winfield to attend School at SAIT, in Calgary and, unbeknownst to him, landed at the home of his future In-Laws.
Stan and Sharon were married on May 26, 1962.
Little Shannon was born in Calgary May 1963, after which the trio headed for Bible School in Poplar Valley. An assignment was given to head for Fort Smith and off they went on God's business, ministering to the community.
Next came a parsonage in Edmonton with the Pentecostal Church and another little bundle, Sharla, came along in April of 1968.
Five years in Edmonton and the call from God came again. Off to beautiful BC they went, with great delight, to leave behind the frigid Edmonton winters.
Child three and four came along a few years later. Little Shauna-Marie in January 1977 and finally "the baby boy" Steven in February 1979.
Through the years Stan faithfully served in God's calling with kindness, sincerity and integrity. His compassion for people and being a servant leader shone through in all aspects of his life.
He was dependable, hard working and a jack-of-all trades, which led him to start Stan's Decorating Service in 1977. Always accepting requests for assistance with an infectious smile. He always got the job done on time and on budget (and the budget was generally zero!).
In 1984, a call back to Alberta and the little town of Didsbury to plant a new church, where they stayed until 1989.
The mountains and climate beckoned Stan back from the prairies and this time it was for good.
Stan's love of God, family and life was prevalent in everything he said and did. His care for the needy, his generous heart and his gracious demeanor were a testament of him living out God's plan.
On June 5th, Stan flew to Jesus, where there is no doubt, he was welcomed with a resounding "well done thou good and faithful servant". He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered and our challenge now is to carry on his legacy of faith, family and helping others.
