We are heartbroken to announce the sudden passing of our dear dad, Bruce Alsbury, on Jan. 29, 2015. He will be sadly missed by June, his cherished wife of 62 years, his 3 daughters, Ruth (Rick), Carol (Mark), Ann (Matt), and son Michael. He also leaves his sister, Diane, and his beloved grandchildren Kelly (Gail), Tyler, Allison (Andy), Jennifer, and Morgan. We are sorry that he just missed meeting his first two great-grandchildren, both due in the coming months.
Dad was born and raised in Vancouver. After graduation, he attended U.B.C. and earned Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Business degrees. He continued on to become a Certified General Accountant and enjoyed a long and successful career as Assistant Secretary Treasurer for Langley, Port Hardy, and Hope School Districts.
Health and fitness were important to dad. From a young age he was an avid skier and loved to spend days on the slopes with friends and family. Even at 85 years old, he still had his skis and always hoped that there'd be one more opportunity to get up the mountain. He also enjoyed running, and participated in many "fun runs" over the years.
His lifelong dream was to learn to sail and the move to Port Hardy provided the opportunity to buy their sailboat "Daisy". They spent many enjoyable days salmon fishing, and exploring the Gulf and San Juan Islands.
Dad also loved music. As a young boy he played trumpet with the Kitsilano Boys Band, and later was involved for many years with the Abbotsford Concert Band. Together, mom and dad shared a love of ballroom dancing and became very accomplished dancers. They made many wonderful friends while taking classes and attending local dance hall events.
Dad was a very kind and gentle man. He loved his family and was happiest when everyone was together. We will all miss him enormously, but will be forever grateful for his love and the wonderful memories he has left with us.
The family will be hosting a tea on Saturday, February 28th, at 3 p.m. at the Sandman Hotel in Abbotsford. There will be an opportunity to speak if you have any special thoughts or stories to share.
