

Born in Davidson County, NC, on September 16, 1948, he was the son of the late George Rary and Rebecca Jean Phifer Rary.
In addition to his parents, James was also preceded in death by one sister, Judy Leonard.
Upon graduating from high school, James proudly served in the United States Air Force, stationed in Greece from 1968-1972.
He returned to Salisbury and worked as Deputy Sherriff with Rowan County Sheriff’s Department, and served as a Bailiff with the Rowan County Courthouse. James later retired from Phillip Morris Company.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association, North Carolina Sheriffs Association and loved spending time with family especially going to Garden City Beach and his canine companions. He was an avid fan of 70’s and 80’s music, stating that good music ended with those eras.
In 1985, he married Rebecca Diane McBride Rary, and shared 38 years together until his passing.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Rebecca; daughter, Kimbla Pharis Overcash; sister, Deborah Barbagelata; grandchildren, Kirstie Diane Beasley and Dalton Cody Beasley; one great-grandchild, Jace Remy Beasley and Sassy, his beloved dog.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday, January 14, 2025 at 11:00 AM at West Lawn Memorial Park.
