Richard was born in Rowan County on October 27, 1941. He was the son of the late Jones Richard Kirk Sr. and Essie Rebecca Ramseur Kirk. He grew up in China Grove and graduated from Landis High School in 1960. He graduated from Catawba College in 1964 and supported his alma mater throughout his life. He was a devoted NC State fan. He was employed by Sherwin Williams for over 25 years. He also worked for Industrial Power Sales for many years until he retired. He was known, by those who loved him, as a hardworking man who was devoted to his daughters, any and all sports, and his church, St. James United Methodist in Raleigh. He was also known for his sense of humor, which kept us all in good spirits during his final days. He made a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him and he will be missed.
Left to cherish his memory are his two daughters, Phyllis Kirk Evans and Amy Kirk Fortune of Marion, his six grandchildren and his thirteen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Ronald Kirk (Jeanne) of China Grove, his ex-wife Linda Goodnight of Spindale, his two nieces, and several cousins.
A graveside service will be held at Greenlawn Cemetery in China Grove at 11:00am on Friday, January 2nd, 2026. Officiating the service is his cousin, Ken Sides.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Chiefs Club at Catawba College athletic department @ 2300 W Innes St, Salisbury 28144 may be made in his name.
