

Mr. Walter Bernard Meyers, of China Grove, passed away on Friday May 26, 2017 at his residence. Born on April 23 1922 in Redmond Illinois, he was the son of the late Bernard L. and Blanch McCollum Meyers. He served his county in the US Navy having served in the Pacific theatre during WWII on the ship US LST 809. He received the Victory Medal, the American Campaign medal and the Asiatic Pacific area campaign medal. Mr. Meyers was there at Iwo Jima when the flag was raised. He was a member of the VFW Post 3006 and First United Methodist Church in China Grove, where he was a member of the choir, and a Sunday School teacher of the Safrit Men’s class. He loved to fish, hunt, travel and garden. Professionally, he worked for 37 years with U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Laboratory in Fort Belvore Virginia and was instrumental with development of night vision devices.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his wife Emma Columbea Meyers, and a sister Mary Susanne Collier.
Visitation will be on Monday May 29, 2017 from 10:00 til 11:00 at First United Methodist Church in China Grove with funeral at 11:00 also at the church with Rev. Mike Goode, minister. Entombment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park in China Grove. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church 110 W. Church St. China Grove, NC 28023.
