Jo Ann Silva Bakker was born on September 24, 1935, in Oakland, California to her parents Margaret and Joseph Silva. Jo Ann passed peacefully on the evening of January 13, 2026, in her home with her family at her side.
Jo Ann lived a life shaped by family, perseverance, and the quiet comforts of home.
In 1968, Jo Ann married Gysbert Bakker. Together they brought their families together and raised their children; Dennis, Yvette, Cindy, Gerrit, and Denelle Bakker. In 1972, the family moved to Chowchilla, California where Jo Ann continued to build a home grounded in routine, care, and tradition.
Jo Ann dedicated 27 years of her life working for the Chowchilla School District, where she touched the lives of countless children with her patience, guidance, and compassion. She took pride in helping her students learn, grow, and feel supported, and her impact extended far beyond the classroom.
Jo Ann found joy in creativity and craftsmanship. She loved knitting, sewing and especially quilting, taking great pride in her quilt work and participating in block-of-the-month projects that reflected her patience and attention to detail. Each fall, she was well known for her persimmon cookies, a seasonal tradition that became a small but meaningful part of family life. No matter the season, pies were a must; not only did she bake them, but she made sure everyone left with one of their own. She also loved to travel, enjoying the opportunity to explore new places and experiences whenever she could with her husband.
She is preceded in death by her son Dennis Bakker, and her sister Laura Parsons. Jo Ann is remembered by her loving husband Gysbert, her brother Joe, her children Yvette, Cindy, Gerrit, and Denelle, and her beloved grandson Jonathan with whom she shared a close and cherished bond. Jo Ann is also remembered by her grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended friends and family.
Jo Ann will be remembered for her sense of humor, generosity, creativity, and the deep connections she formed with those closest to her. Her presence will be missed, and her memory will live on through the traditions she kept and the love she gave.
She will forever remain in her family’s hearts and memories.
