Elizabeth “Liz” Alice (Felton) Cooper, 76, a beloved, faithful, and generous woman, was born June 3, 1948, in Birmingham, Alabama, and passed away on October 27, 2024. After this introduction, Liz will be remembered for the steady joy she brought to others and the uplifting way she made everyday life feel meaningful and bright.
Liz attended Holmes High School and graduated in 1966, proudly playing softball for the Holmes Bulldogs. She continued her education at the University of Alabama, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and graduating in 1970.
Liz devoted her life’s work to serving children as a teacher in Alabama Public Schools. She retired in 2010, having taught over 2,400 students—each one touched by her patience, care, and unwavering belief in what young people could become.
While in college, Liz met Mike, and their story grew into a lifelong partnership. Liz and Mike Cooper were married in 1972 and settled in Birmingham, where they built a home filled with love and purpose. They welcomed their son in 1974 and their daughter in 1976, and Liz’s family remained her deepest joy.
Outside of work and home, Liz embraced the simple gifts of time spent outdoors. She enjoyed kayaking, hiking, and gardening—interests that reflected her calm spirit, her appreciation for beauty, and her ability to find happiness in the everyday.
Liz is survived by her husband, Mike Cooper; her son, Jason Cooper (Alison); her daughter, Grace Cooper; and her granddaughter, Beth Cooper. Liz is also survived by her brother, Jim Felton, Jr., and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Jim Felton, and her mother, Mary Felton.
