Michael Owen Porter Jr. was a man of vision, determination, and leadership. His natural ability to set priorities and accomplish goals permeated throughout his life. He thrived in an environment of organization and structure, and when it was lacking, he took the initiative to create it.
Born and raised in Savannah, GA to Michael Sr. and Diana Porter, Michael was a curious and adventurous child who loved the outdoors. These qualities carried into adulthood, shaping the man he would become. He shared his childhood years with his younger brother, Milton, whom he guided and influenced — sometimes mischievously, but always with love. Their father often took them to Tybee Island to surf, a treasured pastime that created lasting memories.
Michael's enthusiasm for learning and natural leadership skills emerged early in his life. He excelled academically, developing a structured approach to his studies and demonstrating a keen problem-solving ability. His analytical mind and practical approach to challenges earned him the title of "Most Likely to Succeed" during his senior year of high school.
His passion for knowledge continued at Emory University in Atlanta, where he pursued a business degree, followed by an MBA in 1966. As a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity, he expanded his leadership and philanthropic ambitions. Michael's drive and intellect set him apart, and he approached every challenge with confidence and determination.
Michael met the love of his life, Candace, during college. Three years after completing his master's degree, they married in beautiful Charleston, SC, where Candace's family resided. Their love for Charleston remained strong, and they visited often.
Family was at the heart of Michael’s life. He and Candace raised two children, Michael III and Savannah, the latter named after his beloved hometown. Their family grew with the arrival of three grandchildren, Logan, Taylor, and Ariel. Michael's approach to family life mirrored his professional demeanor—organized, patient, and strong. He led by example, instilling values of determination, respect, and discernment in his children.
A lover of animals, Michael cherished his two German Shepherds, Jake and Roxy. He also found immense joy in the outdoors, engaging in activities such as surfing, scuba diving, sailing, hiking, and golf. He was a dedicated Georgia Bulldogs fan and rarely missed a professional golf event on ESPN.
Michael’s adventurous nature extended to travel, where he took great pleasure in planning and organizing family vacations. His favorite destinations included the Great Smoky Mountains, San Diego, Disney, and various international locations. He and Candace honeymooned in Australia, diving in the Great Barrier Reef, and later took their children on a memorable Caribbean cruise around the British Virgin Islands.
In his professional life, Michael was a visionary leader. As one of the founders of Porter Trading, LLC, he served as CFO, overseeing the financial direction of the company. His strategic thinking and efficiency propelled the business forward, and his ability to innovate and optimize operations made him an invaluable asset.
Retirement, like everything else in Michael’s life, was well-planned. He and Candace moved to St. Simons Island, GA, where they reconnected with lifelong friends. He continued his passion for golf and the outdoors, eventually taking up woodworking when traveling became more challenging. Also an avid reader, he relished in quiet moments on his front-porch swing while immersing himself in a book.
Michael passed away peacefully on March 28, 2020, surrounded by his beloved friends and family. He is survived by his children, Michael III and Savannah, and his grandchildren, who will continue to cherish his legacy.
Michael Owen Porter Jr. was a well-rounded man who relentlessly pursued his goals. Decisive, outspoken, and always optimistic, he was a natural leader who inspired those who surrounded him. His legacy of hard work, dedication, and love will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
