
James Lofton Hammond, 91, of Clayton, NC passed away peacefully on Friday morning, May 26, surrounded by family. James (Jim) was a WWII veteran, having served in the 20th Armored Division in Europe. He later graduated with a BS from Drexel University, and with an MBA from the University of Delaware. A native of Delaware, he was a talented violinist since childhood, and a love of music remained an important part of his life. He spent his career in finance in the utilities industry, and retired as Sr. VP of Finance from Green Mountain Power in Burlington, VT in 1985, when he moved his family to New Bern, NC. Jim is survived by his wife of 57 years, Myra; daughter Cindy Cummings of Clayton; son David of Norfolk, VA (Jeananne); daughter Beth Brooks of Clayton (Ray); and daughter Melissa Scott of Cary (Walter). He is also survived by six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A service to celebrate his life will be held in the chapel of Centenary United Methodist Church in New Bern, NC on June 6 at 2PM. Following interment in the garden of the church columbarium, family and friends are welcome at a reception in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Jim’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or to the charity of one’s choice.
