John Silvester Bartley Jr. (79) of Winterville, NC passed away in the early morning of Saturday, October 19, 2024, in Greenville North Carolina. He was born to John Silvester Bartley Sr. and Emma Jane Hunsinger-Bartley on June 27, 1945, in Philadelphia, PA. John attended Elementary School through High School in Clayton, New Jersey and graduated from Clayton High School in 1963. John earned his Eagle Scout honor at age 15. In 1963 he joined the United States Army and served as an Avionics Technician. After the Army John began working for Bell and Howell and retired in 2010.
In 1969 John joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS). John lived most of his life in New Jersey and in New Jersey he met his first wife Linda L. Harding-Bartley and adopted her son Billy. Later they had Christine, Jessica and Rebecca. Having a family and being a dad was one of John’s greatest joys. In Pitman, New Jersey John was an active member of his church serving as ward clerk for many years. John was a loving father and devoted husband, he loved to make his children laugh by being silly and not taking things too seriously. In 1988 he was sealed to his family in the Washington DC Temple for time and all eternity.
In 1996 John moved to Clayton, North Carolina through a job transfer with Bell and Howell. In North Carolina he continued to serve in the LDS Church, made friends, and grew his love for golf being able to play more months out of the year. In July of 2004 his wife Linda passed away after a long battle with cancer. John continued to stay loyal in the LDS church and in January 2006 met Annie Stanfield and they were married on June 24, 2006. Through Annie he gained 2 stepsons David and Tommy; however, if you asked John, he would not call them his stepsons just sons. John made friends easily and once you were his friend you were also family.
In retirement, John and Annie served as Temple workers in the Raleigh, NC Temple from 2010-2022. John also loved his grandchildren, great grandchildren and step grandchildren, but again if you asked John, he would say there is no difference and took on the name “Poppy’ with pride. If there was one word to describe John it would have to be loyal. John was loyal to his wives and children, friends and family, his job, and country. John lived his life honoring the Boy Scout Oath “On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my Country.”
John is preceded in death by his brother James Cecil Bartley, father John Sylvester Bartley Sr. mother Emma Jane Hunsinger-Bartley and first wife Linda Louise Harding-Bartley.
He is survived by his wife Annie Bartley of Winterville, NC; children and stepchildren Billy Bartley of Mt. Pleasant, UT; David Stanfield and wife Tiffany of Irmo, SC; Christine Jagow of Orofino, ID; Tommy Stanfield and wife Jamie of Winterville, NC; Jessica Bartley-Kreyssler and husband Josh of Post Falls, ID; and Rebecca Bartley of Garner, NC. His grandchildren Jared, Jordan, Makenna, Allanah, Sarah, Emma, Tommy Jr. (T.), Linda Rose (Rosie) Erin, Julianne, Lydia, Holland, Jeriad Paul (JP), Addison, Patrick, and four great grandchildren.
