Joseph Larry Byrd

Joseph Larry Byrd, 74, the son of the late James Hubert and Wenonah Jones Byrd died on Thursday, May 17, 2018. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm Sunday, May 20, 2018 at Powhatan Original Free Will Baptist Church with a private interment following at Pinecrest Memorial Park. A man of many traits, Mr. Byrd was employed with O’Neal Motors for 24 years and Capital Ford for 31 years as an auto body technician. A faithful member of his previous church, Garner Advent Christian Church and of his current church, Powhatan Original Free Will Baptist Church where he served as President of the Willard Benson Sunday School Class, a member of the Laymen’s League and a leader of the adult VBS program. An avid fisherman and hunter, Larry was a caregiver at heart, always taking time to listen to friends and his family of which honesty and truthfulness were always first.

He is survived by his wife, Sue Griffin Byrd; sons, William Byrd and husband Duncan Fimcox, James Byrd and wife Tammy; one sister, Almetrice Byrd Smith and husband Percy; brothers, Rayford Byrd and wife Geraldine, Earl Byrd and wife Katie, David Byrd and wife Shirley; grandchildren, Ashleigh Byrd Schmitt and husband Josh, Lorie Byrd; his great grandchildren who were the apple of his eye, Ryleigh and Payson Schmitt; many loving nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his first wife, Hilda Myrick Byrd; sisters, Erdine Byrd Venable, Betty Jean Byrd Mizio and Mary Elizabeth Byrd Carroll; a brother, Billy Ray Byrd.
