Mr. Larry Rogers Benson, 74, of Clayton died Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield. He was born February 24, 1941 in Johnston County son of the late Claude and Ruby Sasser Benson. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Alvin “Hump” Benson. Mr. Benson was a US Army veteran and was a member of the American Legion in Clayton. He worked for the News and Observer for 42 years. Mr. Benson and his wife raised Troubled Waters Dairy Goats and achieved the top 10 French Alpine Dairy Goat milk and butter fat production in the U.S. A funeral service will be held Sunday, February 14 at 2:00 P.M. in the McLaurin Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Pinecrest Memorial Park. He is survived by his wife, Jeannie Tomlinson Benson, a daughter, Sherry Truitt and husband Michael of Clayton, three grandchildren, Michael Truitt, III, Nathaniel Truitt, and Monica Manzer and husband Daniel, one great grandchild, Sterling Manzer, two brothers, Shelton Dwight Benson and wife Janice and Edward Benson all of Clayton, and a sister, Leona Ellis of Clayton. The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon, February 13 from 2:00 – 4:00 P.M. at McLaurin Funeral Home in Clayton.
