It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Phyllis (Johnson) Stroup, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, who left this world on April 14, 2026, at the age of 92. Phyllis was born on March 28, 1934, in the quiet town of Reed City, Michigan, to Clarence and Minnie Johnson. Her life was a testament to kindness, warmth, and the joys of shared moments.
In March of 1953, she married the love of her life, Robert Stroup, in the very place she was born. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where they dedicated themselves to building a home for their three daughters, Patricia (David) Major and Barbara (Edward) Ulanch, and Cheryl (Joseph) Deschaine. Her daughter, Cheryl and husband, Robert preceded her in passing, but their memories remain etched in the hearts of their family.
Phyllis was a vibrant soul who found joy in the simplest of pleasures. Her passion for cooking was well-known. She enjoyed many hours of watching the Food Network. Phyllis also had an enthusiastic spirit for NASCAR, spending weekends cheering on her favorite drivers with unbridled enthusiasm.
Her career as a greeter at a large grocery chain in Michigan was more than a job; it was a calling. Phyllis had an innate gift for making everyone feel welcome, and her genuine interest in others' lives brought light to countless customers. Even after she moved to an assisted living facility in North Carolina, her warmth could not be contained. Appointed as an ambassador for the community, she continued to share her ready smile and infectious positivity with everyone she met.
Phyllis leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion. Her absence will be deeply felt, yet her spirit will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, an organization close to Phyllis's heart. The family also wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Kingswood Reserve for their exceptional care and comfort during Phyllis's final months and to Gentiva Hospice for their compassionate support.
A private ceremony will be held to honor Phyllis's life, respecting her wishes for an intimate farewell surrounded by those closest to her.
We celebrate Phyllis Stroup's remarkable life, filled with love, laughter, and the beauty of human connection. She will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
