

Walton Franklin “Steve” McHorney a retired tugboat engineer of 47 years, passed away on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at his home. Born June 9, 1939, Steve was the son of the late Walton F. McHorney and Mary Elizabeth McHorney Ballentine. He loved hunting with his son, fishing, joking around and getting out. Steve was also devoted to his family, looking after his mom and wife VERY WELL even when he wasn’t feeling well. He was a wonderful cook and loved fruit, seafood and a good roast! Deer meat was one of his favorites. In his spare time, he enjoyed relaxing to a good western and the Andy Griffith show every day.
He is survived by his daughter, Laura Gwinn; sons, Wayne McHorney and Mark McHorney; grandchildren, Brittany and Caitlin McHorney, Rick Ramsey, Nicole Ramsey, Keith McHorney and, Jessica Tart; great grandchildren, Mia Scott, Gage McHorney, Jayda McHorney, Jadyn Ramsey, Caitlyn Ramsey, Madison Ramsey, Nao Ramsey, Emma Hoff, Evie Ramsey and, Tristan Tart; great-great grandchildren, Waylon Mahor and Emberly Ramsey; nieces, Jodi Duncan and Gina White; a sister, Janice Stokes.
In addition to his parents, Steve is also preceded in death by his wife, Josi McHorney; grandsons, Christopher Carrier and Jerome W. McHorney, II; sisters, Mary Elizabeth Albert and Delores Dunlow; brother, Eddie Ballentine.
A funeral service celebrating his life will be held on Monday, August 4, 2025, at 4:00pm in the chapel of McLaurin Funeral Home. The committal service will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at 1:00pm at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Virginia Beach, VA.
