Born in Westfield, Massachusetts, on September 14, 1935, he was a son to the late William Russell Plummer Sr. and Muriel Sheldon Plummer.
Bill was selected as an early student in the evolution of data processing and attended IBM programming school while working with US Rubber. In 1966, Bill joined Gilbarco Corporation and relocated his young family from Southampton, Massachusetts, to Greensboro, North Carolina, to run the Gilbarco Corporation data center. Bill worked for WR Grace as a Data Processing Manager.
Later, the family moved to Raleigh where Bill’s career changed course landing him in sales positions with SC Data and Carolina Data where his upbeat personality and wit opened many doors, well beyond “official” retirement.
Bill was an avid golfer and an active member of Raleigh Country Club and later Pine Hollow Golf Club, baseball player and Red Sox fan, hockey player, motorcycle enthusiast and beloved family man.
Bill met his best friend and the love of his life when he was 14 years old, and cherished every day, they were together for the next 75 years, married for the last 68. Reflective in his later years, he was often heard to say how incredibly lucky and happy his life had been, which seemed to baffle him. He is lovingly remembered as our “SOB”, our Sweet Old Bill.
He is survived by his loving wife, Beverly Duvall Plummer of Clayton, NC; daughter, Deborah Tarter of Marion, NC; sons, Eric Plummer and his wife Maryann of Wilmington, NC; Andrew Plummer and wife Dawn Jones of San Francisco, CA; grandchildren, Karen Mace, Michael Mace, Candace Patterson, Matthew Plummer and Quinn Plummer; and great grandchildren, Ebin Poole, Magnus Patterson and Cyril Patterson.
