

Master Sergeant Charles G. VanDette, passed away Monday, November 29, 2021, at age 82 at
his home in Safety Harbor, Florida. Charles was born in Flint, Michigan June 24, 1939, to Ralph
Joseph VanDette and Eva Grace (Schlosser) VanDette. He graduated from Lakeview
Highschool, Lakeview, MI and received his associate degree from St. Petersburg college, St.
Petersburg, Florida. On November 1st, 1960, he married Ola May (Hunter) VanDette, and they
raised three children together. He joined the United States Air Force February 20, 1958, and
proudly served his country for 22 years before retiring to Oldsmar, Florida. During his military
service Charles was awarded the Air force Commendation Medal, Air Force Good Conduct
Medal (20 Feb 1958 – 31 Aug 1980) with one Silver and one Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Small
Arms Marksmanship Ribbon, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon, and National Defense
Service Ribbon. Charles had a passion for fishing, bowling, softball, and woodworking. He loved
to travel and he and Ola May visited all 50 states. Charles admitted that the GREAT
OUTDOORS was his CHURCH. Charles was preceded in death by his parents and his brother
Ralph James VanDette Jr. He is survived by wife, Ola May (Hunter) VanDette, daughter
Christine Marie VanDette, son, David Nelson-VanDette and his spouse Chris Nelson-VanDette,
daughter, Debra May (VanDette) Cain, Grandson Bryan VanderWeit and his fiancé Cayleigh
Mullen, Grandson Eric VanderWeit, and his spouse Jasenne (Adams) VanderWeit, and their
children, Great-Granddaughter Rowenne Myla VanderWeit, and Great-Grandson Judah Mann
VanderWeit, two sisters, Lois Ann (VanDette,) Wheeler and DelRita (VanDette) Pearl, many
nieces and nephews, and special friend Alice Philp. Charles VanDette will be laid to rest in (Bushnell) Florida National Cemetery January 5, 2022 12:00 noon.
