2018. Ray was born in Greenville, GA to the late Ira Woodruff and Mittie
Mae Woodruff.
In 1950 Ray met Peggie Jean Holt, which started a two year courtship,
mostly through letters while he served in the US Army in Europe. They
were married on December 14, 1952 and soon moved from Columbus, GA
to Clearwater, FL. He worked for Curtis and Gross Construction Company
for several years before starting his own lawn service business which he
operated for over 30 years. Many young men worked for him during this
time where they learned a strong work ethic and witnessed his love of the
Lord. He was always involved in church, serving as a Deacon, usher, and
on many committees. In addition to his love of the Lord and his family, Ray
loved both gardening and traveling. Many Saturday nights would find Ray
and Peggie playing dominoes with a group of friends who had formed a
special bond during their time at Calvary Baptist Church. But most important,
Ray will be remembered for his smile. It would light up the room and bring joy
and laughter to whomever he met.
He is survived by his three children and four grandchildren: Thomas Woodruff,
his wife Barbara of Rotonda West, FL and daughter Molly Woodruff; Judith
Woodruff of Clearwater, her son Rob McCall and his wife Tiffany, and three
precious great-grandsons, James, Patrick, and Brendan, and her daughter
Virginia McCall; Betsy McKnight of Safety Harbor, FL, her husband Tom and
son Kevin McKnight; a sister, Barbara Jane Greene, and a brother, Frederick
Woodruff. He is predeceased by his sisters Dorothy Bruner and Josephine Bush,
brothers Milton Woodruff and Eugene Woodruff.
The family will receive friends Sunday, September 9th from 1:00pm - 2:00pm
at Sylvan Abbey Funeral Home and the funeral service will follow.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers that you make your donations to
Suncoast Hospice or Florida Baptist Children’s Homes.
